"Peristiwa Rengasdengklok"

Peristiwa Rengasdengklok adalah peristiwa dimulai dari "penculikan" yang dilakukan oleh sejumlah pemuda (a.l. Soekarni, Wikana dan Chaerul Saleh dari perkumpulan "Menteng 31" terhadap Soekarno dan Hatta. Peristiwa ini terjadi pada tanggal 16 Agustus 1945 pukul 04.00. WIB, Soekarno dan Hatta dibawa ke Rengasdengklok, Karawang, untuk kemudian didesak agar mempercepat proklamasi kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia,sampai dengan terjadinya kesepakatan antara golongan tua yang diwakili Soekarno dan Hatta serta Mr. Achmad Subardjo dengan golongan muda tentang kapan proklamasi akan dilaksanakan.
Menghadapi desakan tersebut, Soekarno dan Hatta tetap tidak berubah pendirian. Sementara itu di Jakarta, Chairul dan kawan-kawan telah menyusun rencana untuk merebut kekuasaan. Tetapi apa yang telah direncanakan tidak berhasil dijalankan karena tidak semua anggota PETA mendukung rencana tersebut.
Proklamasi kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia rencananya akan dibacakan Bung Karno dan Bung Hatta pada hari Jumat, 17 Agustus 1945 di lapangan IKADA(yang sekarang telah menjadi lapangan Monas) atau di rumah Bung Karno di Jl.Pegangsaan Timur 56. Dipilih rumah Bung Karno karena di lapangan IKADA sudah tersebar bahwa ada sebuah acara yang akan diselenggarakan, sehingga tentara-tentara jepang sudah berjaga-jaga, untuk menghindari kericuhan, antara penonton-penonton saat terjadi pembacaan teks proklamasi, dipilihlah rumah Soekarno di jalan Pegangsaan Timur No.56. Teks Proklamasi disusun di Jakarta, bukan di Rengasdengklok, bukan di rumah seorang Tionghoa, Djiaw Kie Siong yang diusir dari rumahnya oleh anggota PETA agar dapat ditempati oleh "rombongan dari Jakarta". Naskah teks proklamasi di susun di rumah Laksamana Muda Maeda di Jakarta, bukan di Rengasdengklok. Bendera Merah Putih sudah dikibarkan para pejuang di Rengasdengklok pada Rabu tanggal 16 Agustus, sebagai persiapan untuk proklamasi kemerdekaan Indonesia.
Karena tidak mendapat berita dari Jakarta, maka Jusuf Kunto dikirim untuk berunding dengan pemuda-pemuda yang ada di Jakarta. Namun sesampainya di Jakarta, Kunto hanya menemui Wikana dan Mr. Achmad Soebardjo, kemudian Kunto dan Achmad Soebardjo ke Rangasdengklok untuk menjemput Soekarno, Hatta, Fatmawati dan Guntur. Achmad Soebardjo mengundang Bung Karno dan Hatta berangkat ke Jakarta untuk membacakan proklamasi di Jalan Pegangsaan Timur 56. Pada tanggal 16 tengah malam rombongan tersebut sampai di Jakarta.
Keesokan harinya, tepatnya tanggal 17 Agustus 1945 pernyataan proklamasi dikumandangkan dengan teks proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia yang diketik oleh Sayuti Melik menggunakan mesin ketik yang "dipinjam" (tepatnya sebetulnya diambil) dari kantor Kepala Perwakilan Angkatan Laut Jerman, Mayor (Laut) Dr. Hermann Kandeler.^[1]

Latar belakang

Pada waktu itu Soekarno dan Moh. Hatta, tokoh-tokoh menginginkan agar proklamasi dilakukan melalui PPKI, sementara golongan pemuda menginginkan agar proklamasi dilakukan secepatnya tanpa melalui PPKI yang dianggap sebagai badan buatan JEPANG. Selain itu, hal tersebut dilakukan agar Soekarno dan Moh. Hatta tidak terpengaruh oleh Jepang. Para golongan pemuda khawatir apabila kemerdekaan yang sebenarnya merupakan hasil dari perjuangan bangsa Indonesia, menjadi seolah-olah merupakan pemberian dari Jepang.
Sebelumnya golongan pemuda telah mengadakan suatu perundingan di salah satu lembaga bakteriologi di PEGANGSAAN TIMUR JAKARTA, pada tanggal 15 AGUSTUS. Dalam pertemuan ini diputuskan agar pelaksanaan kemerdekaan dilepaskan segala ikatan dan hubungan dengan janji kemerdekaan dari Jepang. Hasil keputusan disampaikan kepada Ir. Soekarno pada malam harinya tetapi ditolak Soekarno karena merasa bertanggung jawab sebagai ketua PPKI.
